| Jackman and Serkis Talk 'Flushed' | 03/11/06, 9:11pm EST
| Coming Soon snagged an interview with 'Flushed Away' stars Hugh Jackman and Andy Serkis, who play Roddy and Spike, respectively.
In the interview, Jackman explains the original characterization of his character Roddy and why it was changed. Apparently, Roddy started out as a very snobbish character equipped with servants. However, they changed the snobbery of the character to make him more likeable. The character now "thinks of himself as a James Bond character. He's having the time of his life. And, he sings occasionally." Although, the singing of the sewer slugs is the true musical performance to watch out for in the film. Jackman comments that his son loves them.
Serkis talks about his neurotic rat character Spike, who apparently thinks "he's bigger than his boots." The character works for The Toad (played by Ian McKellen) and has plans that always get messed up. He was also fortunate enough to work in person with fellow actor Bill Nighy, which is very uncommon in animated films.
While Jackman didn't get a chance to work with Kate Winslet (Rita) in person, he was played back some of her voice work on the film. Addtionally, a woman named Susan would read every part opposite him, which -- Jackman states -- really helped him.
Both Jackman and Serkis gave their reasons for doing an animated film. Serkis really fell for the story, while Jackman has been a huge fan of Aardman since he saw 'The Wrong Trousers' when he was younger.
